Someone has to find a way to put Pan Am back in the air successfully. Since the original Pan Am went bankrupt in December 1991, Pan Am has flown again about four times without success.
Martin Shugrue met in 1996 with the owner of the Pan Am name and logo, Charles Cobb, "a realtor in South Florida," and started a new airline under the Pan Am name and logo headquartered in Miami in September 1996. Martin used large Airbus A300s for the airline and started with little capital. The airline expanded too quickly and then made the worst mistake of buying Carnival Airlines who also had financial problems. After months of uncertainty, Pan Am stopped flying in February 1998 and went bankrupt.
In 1998 a wealthy family from New Hampshire, owners of Guilford Transportation, bought the Pan Am name and logo from a bankruptcy court in Miami. Pan Am's headquarters were moved from Florida to New Hampshire. The airline flew again in November 1999 with a fleet of seven Boeing 727s aircraft. Pan Am began flying the routes from Portsmouth to Orlando Sanford and Gary Chicago. Later more routes were added. In 2002, Pan Am purchased 24 Boeing 727s from United to exapand and with the plan to create a subsidiary in the Dominican Republic. Pan Am added many new routes in 2002, but canceled them a few months later. With a plan to operate a non-union airline, Pan Am moved its operations from the main line to Boston Maine Airways and closed the main airline in 2004.
In 2004 Boston Maine Airways was renamed Pan Am Clipper Connection. This airline flew turboprops and Boeing 727s, with few routes. In 2008, the Federal Aviation Administration declared that the airline was unfit to fly due to safety reasons and was closed. The Pan Am name and logo now operate on trains as Pan Am Railways.
In 2010 a businessman from Brownsville, Texas. bought the Pan Am name with the plan to launch a new airline based in Texas. The plan was to start as a freight airline and then move into passenger service. The new airline had a strange logo. In 2011, the CEO was arrested for possession of child pornography and the future of Pan Am is again in doubt.
"Delta and Northwest" and "United and Continental" have merged. American and U.S. Airways have not merged yet so someone should buy both American and U.S. Airways and merge them under the Pan Am name and logo. This would be the best way for Pan Am return to its former glory and make money again. Someone with money should consider doing this. Someone with a lot of money like Warren Buffett should do this.
